Laptops & 3M Health Systems Boost Productivity, Care Quality, and Reimbursement in Rural Agency
Customer Profile: Memorial Hospital Home Health, Towanda Pennsylvania

Memorial Hospital Home HealthOperating an efficient home health agency can be a challenge when clinicians are required to travel great distances to see their patients. In sparsely populated north central Pennsylvania, seven nurses and three therapists from the home health agency based at Towanda's Memorial Hospital visit patients living in an area spanning roughly 1,500 square miles. On most days, each clinician will see five or six patients and travel an average of 70 miles (some on dirt roads).

Technology has played a significant role in the agency's ability to efficiently provide quality care to such a dispersed case load. It has also been key to improving the accuracy of clinical and financial data. Laptop computers have all but replaced paper charts and a suite of software tools is helping clinicians, support staff and administrators optimize their performance.

"From a financial standpoint, we are doing much, much better than we were three years ago... I can project into the future what visits will cost us and what we're going to be reimbursed. I can also look at productivity by how long a nurse is in a home and how long it takes to go from patient to patient." Jane Russell, RN, Administrator Memorial Hospital Home Health.
